My e-cigarette smells like burning, what can I do?

It can happen that you experience a very unpleasant burning taste when using your electronic cigarette. Here is the explanation and solution.

The principle of the electronic cigarette is to heat a resistance in contact with liquid e. When you press the button of the e cigarette, the battery will provide the energy to heat the resistance and the liquid in contact will evaporate.

The resistance of your e cigarette is wrapped in cotton (or a similar material) to prevent leakage. The resistor cannot be put in direct contact with the liquid because there would be a lot of leaks. When heating, the resistance does not directly heat the liquid e but rather the cotton which is soaked in liquid.

The principle is thus the following: by putting liquid e in your tank, it will be in contact with the cotton of your resistance and the cotton will gradually absorb the liquid.  For this to work well, cotton must be soaked well. It is necessary to heat the cotton impregnated with liquid to produce steam. If the cotton is too dry, it will produce a burning taste, it is the fact of heating cotton, as if you didn't have any liquid.

The taste of burned baked comes from there: The cotton of your resistance is not impregnated enough with liquid e and it "burns" in a way.

Here is the solution in both cases, new resistance or worn resistance: My cigarette smells like burning, what can I do?
  • If your resistance is new (the first week of use), a burning taste occurs because the resistance has not been initiated. Cotton is not yet soaked with liquid e. Therefore, at the first use, pour some drops of liquid e directly on the resistance. You will see that there are small holes on the sides of the resistance, and in these holes you can see the cotton lightly appearing. It is therefore necessary to put a few drops of liquid directly on this cotton and to wait a little while for it to soak well. Then fill the tank and wait a few minutes. The cotton will then be well soaked with liquid e and this should work. Once the priming is done, it is no longer necessary to do it again. Only change of resistance should be made at each change of resistance.
  • If your resistance to already a few weeks: The burning taste comes from the fact that cotton is no longer able to absorb liquid e. It has aged a little and is no longer soaked properly. It therefore remains dry, it has already overheated, and by heating it again it produces a burning taste. It is therefore necessary to change the resistance by a new one and make a priming.
  • If you need to change resistance, here is a guide to find the resistance of my electronic cigarette.
  • If you are a bit of a handyman and have a "reconstructible" resistance, you can also simply change the cotton that surrounds the resistance and start over.
Finally, you just have to make sure that the cotton surrounding your resistance is damp. It is necessary to start its resistance during the first uses, and change the resistance after 3 weeks - 1 month if it starts to smell the burn.
